If you are using an image that is protected by copyright you should obtain permission for use of that image before submitting your thesis. Any image, published or unpublished, is protected under copyright, except for those in the public domain or those that use open licenses, such as Creative Commons licenses. Because Electronic Theses and Dissertations are published online and will be made widely available through the Libraries' Institutional Repository you will not be protected by Section 110 of the US Copyright Act (http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#110), which is generally relied on for class instruction.
